The colour turquoise is the colour of open communication and the colour for our throat chakra.** This post is not just about the colour but how I created a painting for my Reiki Teacher as a thank you for being my guide this last year. I took this year to do a Reiki apprenticeship with her. I met her once a month for a session and witnessed her teach level one and level two of Reiki. She supported me as I learned how to trust my inner voice more. Now at the end of my training I can say I am a Reiki Master. I can teach and attune people with Reiki Energy whenever I feel it is the right time. What I got most from the training was a better connection with myself.
One day we were discussing art and she mentioned a painting she had always wanted. It had the colour turquoise in it with birds on a wire. I saw the image in my head and offered to paint it for her. She gratefully accepted. Since I knew it was a gift I wanted to document the creation. As I was doing research on birds for the painting, trying to figure out if I was going to draw them or take an image from google I saw the movie Dumbo in still images with the elephant, Dumbo and crows flying.
I wrote a post about finding a crow’s wing and drying it. During the training I became more aware of them. A bird that most people despise, I see as secret warriors for spirit. I have also realized crows have always been in the background of my life. The bird is highly intelligent and will even remember a person’s face ** An elephant is a healing animal totem for me as well and I have always felt a love for them.
I had fond memories of the movie Dumbo and at one point I though the image of the elephant and crows would be good in it. I mentioned to her my idea but she preferred not to have the cartoon birds in the painting even though she liked the movie as well. I was torn because I felt a strong need for that image in the painting but the person who I was creating the painting for did not want it. After meditating on the idea my muse spoke up and said this painting will have many layers and the end result will be what my teacher requested but the creation will flow through me how it needed to flow.
I wondered why the elephant was important and I realized the two images I chose were of Dumbo at a cliff, nervous and uncertain and then the next image was of him soaring in the sky, happy. The first image the crows were pushing him off the cliff with silly smiles. The second image they were flying beside him laughing. I could relate to the images as I have often stood on the edge of many cliffs of the unknown, such as taking a year of Reiki Master apprenticeship training and I have always succeeded to enjoy what I have learned from the new experiences. I realized my inner guides were like the laughing crows flying with me on this journey of life.
The painting has gone through many layers and has felt very healing to create it. At the end I just knew it was done. It’s like that some days with creative projects. It just feels right to say done.
The first layer was created by my two little boys to remind me to be simple and enjoy playing.
I knew I wanted to have birds on wire and when I was doing my research I found this image. I put together as a collage and at one moment I thought I would add it at the bottom of the painting. In the end I gave it to her as the card and so I actually gave her two paintings.
At first I had all 7 birds flying but I realized it looks better if I had two birds sitting on the wire so I found one image of a crow and I printed out two different sizes. I also realized that the crows looked better if they didn’t have white around them. I kept the white around the two sitting crows because it looks like an aura.
** These websites will explain more about what I was discussing in this post as I don’t feel like I need to be the one to do all the explaining when someone else has focused their writing on it.
